Happy Noo Yur! 2016 is all about more face, less blog. Check out aprilmatthis.net for the latest. My short film Black Card is now streaming on HBO GO and HBO NOW, and airs February 12! I play Agent Winters.
So busy! Two shows at once! A new short film! An award! First off, The Insurgents at the Labyrinth theater was a success and was extended a week. It also recently made the Kilroy’s list of recommended plays by female and trans playwrights. Here’s a photo of me as the indefatigable Coach from The Times review.
While in performances for Insurgents, I began rehearsals for the ambitious, whimsical IOWA at Playwrights Horizons. Written by the ingenious Jenny Schwartz, with music by the incomparable Todd Almond, and directed by the brilliant Ken Rus Schmoll, it was truly one of the most beautiful and moving shows I’ve had the privilege to be a part of.
After IOWA closed, I got a chance to see “Wendell and the Lemon”, my indie feature debut, on the big screen at the VisionFest screening in TriBeCa. Also, “Black Card“, a short satirical film I shot last winter, screened as a finalist for the HBO Short Film Competition at the American Black Film Festival. (More on this in another post!)
Just as I thought the season couldn’t get any better, on May 18, I was presented with an OBIE Award for Sustained Excellence of Performance. OITNB‘s Lea DeLaria hosted and TONY Winner Lisa Kron (Fun Home) presented me with the award. It was a surreal and validating moment.
This summer has been a delightfully less busy one, enjoying the city with friends and family and the occasional workshop. Next up, I’ll be traveling to Boston for the Huntington Theater’s Summer Workshop with one of my favorite playwrights, Kirsten Greenidge. Then it’s back to the City for rehearsals for the long-awaited Sibyl Kempson/ERS production Fondly, Collette Richland, at New York Theatre Workshop to kick off their 2015/2016 season. Here’s a glimpse of what to expect:
(No, I’m not singing. I’m hosting a secret radio program from inside someone’s home.)
Hi, there! It’s been a while, hasn’t it? So happy to announce that I’m currently in rehearsals for the premiere production of Lucy Thurber’s The Insurgents at the Labyrinth Theater. I play Harriet Tubman as well as a college soccer coach. Check out this link for show details, including the cool animated trailer!
With Joe Manganiello, the hot werewolf from True Blood! I’m playing Eunice, the loud landlady to the iconic couple. (Incidentally, Eunice is my grandma’s name, so this one’s for you!) ACT stage veteran Rene Augesen plays Blanche. So excited to begin rehearsals next week!
Yay! It was three insane days (and nights) of filming, but we got ‘er done. Rx15 is a wrap! Now all we need is a few clams to finish and get this thing seen. Check out the teasers and this plug from our friends over at Indiewire’s Shadow and Act!
Roxë caught a virus. Did she get it from her computer??
